About Twilight

The Twilight Series is a set of four vampire-romance novels written by Stephenie Meyer, an American author. The story is about the protagonist seventeen year old Isabella Swan, who also goes by the name Bella, who falls in love with Edward Cullen, a vampire. The series is narrated in Bella’s point of view, with the exception of the epilogue in Eclipse and Part II of Breaking Dawn which is relayed from the point of view of a werewolf named Jacob Black. Since the debut of Twilight – the first novel in the series in 2005, the books have become very popular globally, especially amongst young adult readers.

The two main characters of the Twilight series are Bella Swan and Edward Cullen. Isabella "Bella" Swan is the protagonist of the Twilight series. She has brown eyes and hair, and seems rather clumsy by nature. She seems to suffer from low self-esteem and doesn’t understand why Edward loves her. She is immune from Edward's supernatural ability to read minds. She is transformed into a vampire in the fourth book and is therefore able to protect herself and others from the mental harm of vampires. Edward Cullen is a vampire from the coven of the Cullen family who feed on animal blood instead of human blood. The Twilight series traces his journey as he falls in love with Bella, then marries her and has a child with her.

Author Stephenie Meyer is said to have explained the idea for Twilight as having come to her in a dream on June 2, 2003. Her dream featured a human girl and a vampire who was in love with her yet had a thirst for her blood. Using this dream as her foundation, Meyer then wrote the transcript for the thirteenth chapter of the book. Although she had minimal writing experience, Meyer was thereafter able to complete the Twilight novel within three months.

New Moon, the first sequel made its debut on the New York Times Best Seller List for Children's Chapter Books at number five, rising to number one in the second week and remaining there for eleven consecutive weeks. After the release of Eclipse, the first three books in the series spent a combination of 143 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller list. Breaking Dawn, the fourth book in the Twilight series was released with an initial print run of 3.7 million copies, with over 1.3 million being sold on day one alone. This set the record in first-day sales performance for the Hachette Book Group USA.

The novel Twilight was adapted into a fantasy film of the same name in 2008, which was directed by Catherine Hardwicke. In the movie Twilight, the character of Bella is played by Kristen Stewart, while Robert Pattinson plays Edward Cullen. The film managed to remain largely faithful to the novel, with a few minor alterations such as omissions of sections of the novel, and additions of some new scenes previously not in the novel. The sequel to this movie was The Twilight Saga: New Moon, which was released on November, 20, 2009.
