Stewart left school in the seventh grade but continued pursuing her education via correspondence. Since then, she has been able to complete her high school education. Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, to John Stewart, a stage manager and television producer, and Jules-Mann Stewart, a script supervisor from Australia, Kristen Stewart began her acting career at the age of eight. This was after an agent watched her performance in her elementary school Christmas play and was impressed by her acting ability.

Kristen Stewart's first acting role was a nonspeaking role in the movie The Thirteenth Year. Thereafter, she appeared in The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas where she played the ring toss girl. Her next part was in The Safety of Objects, an independent film in which she took on the role of a tomboy daughter of a troubled single mother. In Panic Room, Kristen Stewart played a diabetic daughter of a divorcee played by Jodie Foster. It was her successful performance in this film which landed her next role in Cold Creek Manor as Dennis Quaid's and Sharon Stone's daughter. Kristen Stewart landed her first starring role in the film Catch That Kid alongside Max Thieriot and Corbin Bleu. Thereafter she played Lila in Undertow.

Her first critically acclaimed role was in 2004's Speak, which was a TV film based on the novel by Laurie Halse Anderson in which Stewart had very few speaking lines, but received a lot of praise for her performance. In 2005, Stewart took up the role of Lisa in Zathura. A year later, she played Maya in Fierce People, and thereafter she was at it again as Jess Solomon in The Messengers. Stewart played the role of Lucy Hardwicke in 2007 in the film In the Land of Women, costarring alongside Meg Ryan and Adam Brody. Later that year, Stewart starred in the critically acclaimed Into the Wild as Tracy, a teen musician with a crush on Christopher McCandless, a role for which she received positive reviews. Thereafter, she made a cameo in Jumper and What Just Happened, as well as The Cake Eaters. In 2009, Stewart landed a role in The Yellow Handkerchief.

Just after its release, Kristen Stewart won the MTV Best Female Performance award for her role as Bella Swan in the 2008 Twilight movie. She landed this role when Catherine Hardwicke, the director went to see her on the set of Adventureland for an informal screen test. Hardwicke is said to have been captivated by Stewart, which is why she gave her the role of Bella Swan. Thereafter, Stewart took up another subsequent role as Bella in the sequel The Twilight Saga: New Moon. Kristen Stewart was also the recipient of the Rising Star award at the 2010 BAFTAs.
